On April 1, 2011, the Breast Global Health Initiative (BHGI), an alliance of international organizations dedicated to medically underserved women, published a landmark supplement on barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment in low- and middle-resource countries. The supplement, "Global Breast Health Care: Optimizing Delivery in Low- and Middle-Resource Countries," also proposes tools for meeting these challenges.

One of the consensus statements included in the supplement, "Problem solving for breast health care delivery in low and middle resource countries (LMCs): consensus statement from the Breast Health Global Initiative," was co-authored by Dr. Joe Harford, Director, and Ms. Isabel Otero, International Programs Officer, Office of International Affairs. The statement, developed by the Problem Solving Working Group of the BHGI 2010 Global Summit, assesses the cancer burden in low- and middle-resource countries and identifies health care system strengths and weaknesses.

In conjunction with the other consensus statements and articles included in the supplement, the Problem Solving Working Group’s proposals will help inform strategies for reducing worldwide breast cancer mortality.

"Global partnerships, like BHGI, facilitate the exchange of knowledge, experience, and best practices between scientists from different regions of the world--benefitting not only low-income and middle-income countries, but also high-income countries, who can also learn from the research and interventions being developed." - Isabel V. Otero
